I’m British—Here’s What Americans Always Ask Me

As a Brit, traveling to the U.S. comes with one inevitable experience—fielding an endless stream of questions from Americans about the UK. Some are hilarious, some are baffling, and some make me wonder if Hollywood has been running an elaborate prank on them for decades.

1. “Do you know the Queen?”

🇬🇧 - Ah yes, because the UK is just one big village where we all pop round to Buckingham Palace for tea and scones on Sundays. Sadly, I don’t have the Queen’s number (or King Charles’s now), but I can assure you, most Brits have about as much access to royalty as Americans do to Beyoncé.

. 🇺🇸 - “I like your accent, where are you from?”

🇬🇧 - “I’m from the UK.”

🇺🇸 - “Oh, so you’re from London!”

🇬🇧 - “No, I’m from the UK.”

🇺🇸 - “But the UK is in London, right?”

🇬🇧 - 😖😖😖😖😖😖😖

3. 🇺🇸 - “How’s life now that you don’t use the Euro?”

🇬🇧 - “We never used the Euro.”

🇺🇸 - “What? But you left the Europe!”

🇬🇧 - “Yes, but we always had the Pound. And we never left Europe.”

🇺🇸 - “So why did you vote to stop using the Euro?”

🇬🇧 - "I give up..."

4
. 🇺🇸 - “Do you guys celebrate the 4th of July?”

🇬🇧 - “No, that was kind of the whole point.”

🇺🇸 - “Oh… so when do you celebrate independence?”

🇬🇧 - “We don’t. We were already independent.”

🇺🇸 - “That must be sad.”

🇬🇧 - "Ok...."

5. 🇺🇸 - “Why do you drive on the wrong side of the road?”

🇬🇧 - “We don’t. It’s just a different side, not wrong.”

🇺🇸 - “Well, we invented cars, so I think we’d know.”

🇬🇧 - “Actually, the Germans did.”

🇺🇸 - “No, that’s not right, we definitely did.”

🇬🇧 - 🤦 “Mate, Google exists for a reason.”

6
. 🇺🇸 - “Do you speak English in the U.K.?”

🇬🇧 - “…Yes, we speak English.”

🇺🇸 - “Ohhh, but do you have your own language?”

🇬🇧 “Yes. It’s called English.”

🇺🇸 - “But we speak English, so how does that work?”

🇬🇧 - “Not well, apparently...”
